In The Shed: HAFCO Metalmaster HM-32 Belt-Driven Mill Drill

A smart choice for the serious home engineer, the ruggedly-built HAFCO Metalmaster HM-32 Belt-Driven Mill Drill (Order Code: M121) offers reliability, versatility and plenty of power.

It’s propelled by a 1.5kW/2Hp (240V) vertical motor and B-section belt-drive system. The pulley guard opens at any head height and is fitted with a safety micro switch.

Quiet in operation, the HM-32’s head provides 12 spindle speeds between a 100 - 2150rpm range. The mill drill features a forward and reverse spindle switch, plus Emergency Stop button.

Attached to a 3MT spindle, the 75mm diameter quill with spindle lock has 130mm of travel, measurable on the depth scale. The HAFCO mill drill’s spindle-to-table measurement is 455mm. A fine feed hand-wheel operates the quill feed, plus the mill features an easy-to-read depth stop. The fine down feed control can be locked firmly in position when milling.

The wind-up milling head rotates 360º, with the ability to be re-positioned up or down on the Ø115mm column with the aid of a handle-operated rack-and-pinion drive. Maximum throat depth measures in at 202mm.

Rear slide-way cover and slide clamps feature on all axes, whose range of adjustment are as follows:
● Longitudinal travel (X-axis) = 540mm
● Cross travel (Y-axis) = 190mm
● Vertical travel (Z-axis) = 410mm

Metric dial graduations are set at 0.05mm for the X and Y axes. Adjustable leadscrew nuts eliminate backlash on both axes. An optional power feed unit (Order Code: M230) is available and fits straight onto the table to provide smooth variable speed drive on longitudinal travel.

The extra-large 820 x 240mm worktable has a load capacity of 50kg. Fourteen-millimetre T-slots allow the work-piece to be directly mounted to the table or in a milling vice. Two large-diameter control hand-wheels feature fold-in handles and metric calibrations for the longitudinal axis. There are adjustable table — and drill — length stops, plus table locks on both axes.

Abovementioned features and specifications combine in an impressive milling/drilling package capable of:
● Drilling capacity = 31.5mm
● End milling capacity = 22mm
● Face milling capacity = 80mm
